Vermont's largest airport, Burlington International Airport, is situated into a residential area in South Burlington. Downtown Burlington sits approximately five miles away; major ski areas are about a forty-five minute drive; and larger cities like Montreal (an hour and a half away) and Boston (three hours away) are within a day's reach. Burlington International Airport offers direct flights to Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, Detroit, Newark, New York (JFK and LGA), Philadelphia, Plattsburgh, and Washington DC (DCA and IAD).
Burlington International Airport finished major renovations a few years ago, and plans are underway to expand the airport again by adding more hubs, adding new carriers to the airport, and adding another floor to the parking garage. Air traffic at Burlington International Airport can be quite busy at times leading to delays because the airport currently has only one runway. The airport does have a high rate for delayed flights, but the airport is vigorously working to change that. Services within the airport itself are somewhat limited, but those facing long layovers can easily take a taxi or public bus to the University Mall, a five-minute drive from the airport. Passengers who do leave the airport will have to pass through security, however.
Smokers need to be aware that businesses in Vermont are all non-smoking. Smoking is not allowed inside the airport and in outside public areas. Additionally, smoking is not allowed in any bar or restaurant due to state laws.
Burlington International Airport (IATA: BTV, ICAO: KBTV, FAA LID: BTV) is a public airport in South Burlington, Vermont. The airport is three miles (5 km) east of the central business district of Burlington, Vermont's largest city. BTV is owned by the City of Burlington.
Burlington International Airport serves the Burlington metropolitan area, which contained over 206,000 residents as of 2006 U.S. Census estimates. Due to the relatively small size of the market, airlines mostly fly regional airliners on their Burlington routes. A few airlines fly larger jets, such as the Boeing 737 and planes from the Airbus A320 family, to BTV; JetBlue and United Airlines are two such carriers.
Nevertheless, BTV has flights to many major airline hubs in the East and Midwest, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, and Atlanta.
Passenger traffic
BTV enplanes and deplanes almost 700,000 passengers annually. Burlington International represents the country's second fastest growing airport[citation needed] with annual growth from 2004 to 2005 of almost nine percent.[2]
Facilities and aircraft
Burlington International Airport covers an area of 942 acres (381 ha) which contains two asphalt paved runways: 15/33 measuring 8,320 x 150 ft. (2,536 x 46 m) and 1/19 measuring 3,611 x 75 ft. (1,101 x 23 m).[1]
For the 12-month period ending June 30, 2005, the airport had 111,454 aircraft operations, an average of 305 per day: 52% general aviation, 29% air taxi, 13% military and 6% scheduled commercial. There are 84 aircraft based at this airport: 55% single engine, 5% multi-engine, 7% jet aircraft and 33% military.
